The Austin area housing market remains one of the healthiest in the nation, even as it grapples with affordability challenges and an undersupply of housing, a national economist said Wednesday. 'The housing market can't take the shock of a natural event,' real estate economist warns
The exact tally is still impossible to calculate, but at least 10,000 homes and other structures have been destroyed by floods, winds and fires in the past three months. Given the acute construction labor shortage that was already at play before these disasters, reconstruction and its repercussions in residential real estate could pose yet another disaster. "The housing market can't take the shock of a natural event," said Nela Richardson, chief economist at real estate company Redfin   Read More ...

Protecting renters, not landlords, the right call for Portland: Guest opinion
By MARGOT BLACK AND STEVEN GOLDBERG. But numbers are not the same thing as facts and rarely tell the whole story on their own. While acknowledging the stories of staggering rent hikes, the Oregonian otherwise completely dismissed the compelling evidence in support of the relocation policy offered by attorneys, landlords, developers, policy makers, community leaders, and service providers. To ignore these stories and instead rely on a single unverified and decontextualized data point to make a case that the relocation policy may be doing more harm than good is grossly irresponsible   Read More ...

California wildfires worsen strained housing market
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The deadly wildfires that roared through Sonoma and Napa counties last week, destroying thousands of homes, might also scorch the Bay Area’s already brutal housing market for months or years to come, experts warned Friday. Want to be a landlord? These are the top markets this fall for investing in rental homes
High prices and a tight supply of houses for sale are not exactly the best mix for homebuyers, but they're even worse for investors looking to become landlords. Sure, both tenant demand and rental returns are also high, but if the cost to get in is too high, the math doesn't work. The good news is, as always, all real estate is local, so while the national picture may look bleak, certain local markets still offer lucrative options   Read More ...

While the forecast from the Realtor group did not include specific San Diego County estimates, researchers said the figures should be similar to the state total because Southern California represents the state’s biggest housing market   Read More ...
