Russia's laughing at the United States, not President Donald Trump

- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's trolling of US FBI director James Comey's firing was relatively benign; ostensibly, Lavrov's mock surprise at being told of the firing could be taken for a diplomat's polite refusal to discuss the host country's domestic politics. This week, however, the Russian jokes at the expense of the United States got positively unpleasant. First, President Vladimir Putin "offered" to provide the US Congress with a recording of Lavrov's conversation with Trump, in which the US president allegedly revealed highly classified information (the word Putin used, "zapis", cannot really be translated as "transcript", as the Kremlin later claimed)

Is it OK to laugh when the fates seem worse than death?

- Whew. I swear you gotta laugh. Or you cry and you die. It was nothing but laughs until we learned she'd been sticking her head into the hot oven to chase the bugs away. She had a gas oven. Still, I thought. You gotta see the humor. If you don't laugh - even uncomfortably -- life becomes a ceaseless trip toward sticking your head in a gas oven. Laughter isn't

Grief is a 'hamster wheel': How a memoir about death can still be funny

- Nora McInerny Purmort's memoir is difficult to describe. "It's about my husband and dad dying, after my miscarriage — and it's hilarious, obviously," she joked with MPR News host Kerri Miller. "That's a hard thing to explain to people." The book, "It's Okay to Laugh (Crying is Cool Too)", captures the worst moments in McInerny Purmort's life, and the best. It starts with a simple story, she said: Boy meets

John Lithgow, who stars in NBC’s daffy new comedy “Trial & Error” as a poetry prof who may or may not have murdered his wife, is clearly guilty of making viewers laugh. He’s also guilty, in a career spanning nearly a half-century, of freaking out viewers (item: his chilling psycho-killer in the Showtime series “Dexter”), or warming the heart with his character’s humanity (such as his breakout performance as Roberta Muldoon, the transgender former pro football player in “The World According to Garp”)   Read More ...

Why Do Comics Laugh at Their Own Jokes? It’s No Accident
Why Do Comics Laugh at Their Own Jokes? It’s No Accident Photo Does Donald Trump laugh? Last year, many publications pointed out that in the presidential campaign, he never let loose even a chuckle, leading to much speculation and some philosophizing. What's So Funny?
